Ngalyangdoh

The artist has painted Ngalyangdoh, a Dreamtime ancestral being who lived in an area called Kunburray, east of Oenpelli. The actual site of the Dreaming is Kujaborr, where the Dreaming resides. Ngalyangdoh is a Ngalngarridj woman accompanied by her Nakamarrang son. She carries a kunmadj, dilly bag, for collecting snails and usually takes her pet ngarrbek, echidna, with her. The other animal is Nabohkanoh the family dog, duruk, or dingo, dalken. The yam shown in the upper half is yanburray, like potato. The duruk is painted in the classic Oenpelli x-ray style, with the internal organs showing. The old man who painted this djang is a Kundedjnjenghmi artist of great significance. The artist lives at an outstation called Gamarrkawan, in the stone country of western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia © Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory
