The Life and Artistic Path of Volker Böhringer

Born in Eßlingen, Germany, Volker Böhringer was a painter and graphic artist whose work was closely aligned with Neue Sachlichkeit and Surrealism. His formal education began in 1929 at the Württembergische Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart under Ernst Schneidler, later continuing his studies at the Academy as a master student of Hans Spiegel starting in 1933. His career faced significant challenges during the National Socialist era; after refusing to join the Bund Deutscher Maler und Graphiker in 1937, he was banned from exhibiting and working. This period of restriction, coupled with a severe lung disease that required years in sanatoriums, limited his output to drawings between 1944 and 1947. Following his recovery and the death of his parents, he lived on social assistance before finding recognition in the post-war era.

Technique and Subject Matter

Böhringer’s oeuvre is characterized by a profound engagement with the industrialization of the landscape, specifically the transformation of the Neckar Valley from a pastoral river landscape into a highly technical industrial zone. His work often explores the tension between a critical view of overwhelming technology and a personal fascination with the mechanical world, a passion reflected in his own construction of model steam engines and radio receivers. His technical approach was exceptionally meticulous, often described as "skulpto-malerei". He utilized a complex process involving:

His mastery of fine, layered glazing resulted in a surface where no brushstrokes were visible, maintaining an old-master tradition of craftsmanship. His paintings have been held in various collections, including the Städtische Galerie and the Städel Museum.
