The Life and Art of Shikō Munakata

Born in Aomori, Japan, Shikō Munakata was a painter, printmaker, illustrator, and graphic artist. His early years were marked by an intense passion for art, beginning with illustrating kites for his classmates in third grade. After moving to Tokyo to pursue oil painting, he faced significant hardships, including working to repair shoes and selling nattō to survive. While he was initially rejected by the Bunten, he eventually found his calling in the traditional Japanese art of woodblock printing. His career was deeply influenced by his association with the sōsaku-hanga and mingei movements, particularly after Yanagi Sōetsu purchased twenty-five of his prints.

Technique and Philosophy

Munakata’s approach to woodblock printing was defined by a unique philosophy regarding the material itself. He preferred the term itaga over hanga to emphasize the woodblock over the printing process, believing that an artist must give in to the inherent power and beauty of the wood. His technique was characterized by:

His subject matter often drew from the traditions of Aomori, featuring themes such as local folk festivals, nature, and images of floating nude females representing Shinto

kami. His work received international acclaim, including the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale and the Order of Culture from the Japanese government.
