Javier Orfón’s artistic journey began in Caguas, Puerto Rico (1989), a city bearing witness to the indelible marks of colonialism and grappling with persistent crises—themes that consistently inform his creative vision. From childhood, he possessed an instinctive reverence for the natural world alongside a deep fascination with ancestral crafts, influences which would become foundational to his distinctive sculptural practice, coupled with explorations in illustration and groundbreaking printmaking techniques. His formal education commenced at Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture in 2013. During this formative period, he immersed himself in intensive studio work, engaging in spirited debates concerning contemporary art’s role in confronting societal challenges. A pivotal experience was participation in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2022), fostering collaborative endeavors and stimulating experimentation within a vibrant artistic environment—a crucible for honing his skills and broadening his perspectives. Orfón’s artistic trajectory gained considerable momentum with his third solo exhibition, *El Ojo de Arcilla*, presented at Hidrante Art Space in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 2020. This event cemented his reputation as a burgeoning talent within the Puerto Rican art landscape and underscored his unwavering dedication to investigating themes of identity and materiality—a core preoccupation that continues to permeate his oeuvre. Subsequent exhibitions further solidified his artistic stature: *La Casa de Las Almas*, curated by Abdiel Segarra Ríos at Espacio Cómplices in Madrid (Spain), 2022; *No existe un Lugar en el Mundo Poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in The Wake of Hurricane Maria*, showcased at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2022-2023); and *El Momento del Yagrumo*, organized by Marina Reyes Franco at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (2021). A transformative moment arrived with his selection as a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellow in 2023, recognizing his artistic merit and propelling his creative development—a testament to his unwavering commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. He was honored to participate in ARCO Madrid (2024), demonstrating the burgeoning international acclaim surrounding his work.
