A Life of Literary and Visual Exploration
Jiří Kolář was a Czech poet, writer, painter, and translator whose creative output spanned both the literary and visual arts. Born in Protivín, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, his early life was marked by various trades, including training as a cabinet maker, working as a construction worker, security guard, and bartender. By 1943, he had become a full-time writer in Kladno, later moving to Prague to serve as an editor for the publishing house Družstvo Dílo. His literary journey included early erotic poems and membership in the existentialist artistic movement, Skupina 42. His poetic works evolved from early collections like Křestný list to experimental forms such as analfabetogram and cvokogram, where the boundaries between text and visual art began to blur.
The Art of Fragmentation and Collage
In the realm of visual art, Kolář was a pioneer of collage, beginning with exhibitions in 1937. His technique involved using a scalpel to cut images from magazines and creating color through the application of printed paper fragments from diverse sources. He developed several unique collage techniques, including confrontage, froissage, rollage, and chiasmage. His compositions often juxtaposed contrasting elements, such as astronomical maps with Braille writing, to create striking new combinations. His work was featured in prominent international venues, including the New York Guggenheim museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, and Dům U Černé Matky Boží in Prague.
