The Life of Franklin Rawson

Benjamin Franklin Rawson was an Argentine painter belonging to the first generation of painters known as the "precursors." Born in San Juan, he studied under Amadeo Gras and Pierre Douet, later continuing his training in Buenos Aires as a pupil of Fernando García del Molino. Due to political conflicts and his friendship with Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Rawson lived in exile in Chile, where he continued his apprenticeship with the painter Augusto Quinsac Monvoisin.

Rawson's career included portraiture, miniatures, and historical scenes. His notable works include:

  • Murder of Manuel Vicente Maza
  • Rescue in the Cordillera
  • The Flight of Malon
  • The Immaculate Conception

He died in Buenos Aires during an epidemic of yellow fever.
