A Life in Berlin

Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1781, Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Younger spent his life navigating the artistic circles of his home city. He was often called "the Younger" to ensure he was not confused with his uncle, a well-known etcher and teacher. His early years were defined by rigorous study at the Prussian Academy of Arts, where he learned under Daniel Chodowiecki. By the age of fifteen, he was already showing a talent for historical subjects, earning a prize from the Academy in 1796 for a pastel work titled Froben's Death at the Battle of Fehrbellin.

His career was marked by a steady rise through the ranks of the Prussian Academy. He became a member in 1815 and eventually achieved the title of Professor in 1830. By 1846, he had earned a seat on the Academic Senate. His life was deeply intertwined with the institutional life of Berlin, remaining an active figure in the academy until his death in 1853.

Technique and Subject Matter

Kolbe’s work reflected a deep respect for the Dutch Masters, a preference that shaped his oil paintings. He possessed a particular talent for rendering the textures of Medieval costumes with meticulous detail. His versatility allowed him to move between different mediums and scales, from delicate etchings to large-scale frescoes.

His portfolio includes several significant commissions and works held in major collections:

  • Albrecht Achilles Conquers a Flag Near Nuremberg (1806), a monumental oil painting purchased by the city of Berlin.
  • Ascension of Jesus, created for the church at Sanssouci palace.
  • Frescoes depicting scenes from the Nibelungenlied located at the Marmorpalais.
  • Otto I Battling the Hungarians and Barbarossa's Corpse near Antioch, both held by the Berlin National Gallery.
  • A series of ten decorated windows for Ordensburg Marienburg, for which he produced both color sketches and finished kartons.

Artistic Legacy

The precision of his hand is evident in his various technical pursuits, including pastel, oil, frescoes, and etching. His work often focused on historical and religious narratives, capturing specific moments of conflict or devotion. Whether he was depicting the battles and victories of the Teutonic Order for the windows at Ordensburg Marienburg or working on smaller etchings like Bathing Maiden, his focus remained on the accuracy of the era he portrayed.

His contributions to the Prussian Academy and his presence in the Berlin National Gallery ensure his place in the history of German painting. He left behind a body of work that spans the transition of styles in the early nineteenth century, marked by a commitment to historical detail and the traditions of his predecessors.
