A Life in Central Slovakia
Anton Schmidt was an Austrian Baroque painter who became a significant representative of late Baroque painting in Slovakia. While his early life remains largely unknown, he likely studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts around 1728. During his early career, he worked as an assistant to the imperial court theater decorator and architect Giuseppa Galli Bibbeny. His known work in Vienna includes an altarpiece, The Assumption of the Virgin Mary, located in the chapel of the Kurhaus at St. Stephen's Cathedral.
By the end of the 1740s, Schmidt moved to central Slovakia, where he established his permanent residence and artistic life. He settled in Banská Štiavnica, where he was accepted as a citizen in 1752. His presence in the region was notable, as he was the only academic-trained artist with a formal title working in the area. He remained in Banská Štiavnica until his death in 1773.
