Freeman, Fox and Partners designed the box-section deck of the Severn Bridge to be aerodynamically favourable to wind forces hitting the bridge side on. Opened in 1966, the bridge replaced the Aust Cliff to Beachley ferry etween England and Wales, where the Severn is a mile wide. Each 132-tonne section was built in Chepstow and floated downriver to be hoisted into position.

          The Architect of Enchantment

Born in the vibrant cultural heart of London in 1980, Edward Humble-Smith has emerged as a master of visual illusion, a photographer whose lens does not merely capture reality but subtly bends it. Operating from studios nestled in both London and New York, his work occupies a rarefied space where the precision of luxury commerce meets the ethereal whispers of the surreal. To gaze upon a Humble-smith composition is to enter a realm where the boundaries between the tangible and the imagined dissolve, leaving behind an atmosphere imbued with a profound sense of magic and meticulous detail.

His practice is defined by a striking juxtaposition, a delicate dance between geometric rigor and an almost ghostly, atmospheric lightness. Whether documenting the shimmering allure of fine jewelry or the high-fashion elegance of beauty campaigns, he crafts narratives that transcend simple documentation. Each image serves as a window into a meticulously constructed world, where every shadow and highlight is orchestrated to evoke emotion and provoke deep contemplation in the viewer.

          Surrealist Echoes and Digital Mastery

The foundations of Humble-smith’s aesthetic are deeply rooted in the history of perception-altering art. He draws significant inspiration from the Surrealist masters, particularly the dreamlike logic of René Magritte and the quiet, object-oriented stillness of Giorgio Morandi. Like these predecessors, Humble-smith seeks to manipulate the viewer's sense of reality, using the camera as a tool for conceptual exploration rather than mere reproduction.

To achieve this level of visual alchemy, he employs a sophisticated suite of modern techniques. His mastery of advanced digital manipulation, including HDR imaging and complex compositing, allows him to transcend the limitations of conventional photography. This technical prowess enables him to create images that possess an impossible clarity—a hyper-realism that feels both more vivid and more mysterious than life itself. This dedication to craftsmanship extends far beyond the digital realm; he often collaborates with a diverse assembly of specialists, including scientists, engineers, and sculptors, to realize his most ambitious visions, sometimes even handcrafting intricate sets within his own workshop to ensure every frame is imbued with energy and movement.

          A Multidisciplinary Legacy

Beyond the glossy pages of fashion and beauty publications, Humble-smith’s impact extends into the realms of science and engineering. His ability to interpret complex, technical concepts through a poetic lens was notably demonstrated in his commission by the Royal Academy of Engineering. In this project, he translated the essence of fifty years of engineering innovation into a series of evocative photographs, proving that even the most rigid structures can be imbued with artistic soul.

His portfolio is a testament to a career built on the fusion of the organic and the constructed. From the majestic, mythic presence of works like Pegasus to the futuristic, geometric intrigue of Intelligent PIG, his oeuvre continues to push the boundaries of what photography can achieve. As he continues to bridge the gap between the natural world and human artifice, Edward Humble-smith remains a pivotal figure in contemporary visual storytelling, reminding us that beneath the surface of the seen lies an infinite landscape of the unseen.
