Early Life and Education

Born in 1977 in Baia Mare, Romania, Adrian Ghenie emerged as a significant voice in contemporary art. He began his artistic journey at the Arts and Crafts School in his hometown between 1991 and 1994. This early exposure laid the foundation for his later explorations of form and expression. He continued his education at the Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca, graduating in 2001.

Ghenie’s artistic style is characterized by a distinctive approach to portraiture and figuration. He doesn't rely on traditional painting tools like brushes; instead, he favors palette knives and stencils, creating textured, layered surfaces. His canvases often appear gnawed, slashed, blurred, and speckled, reflecting the fragmented nature of memory and history. • In June 2014, “The Fake Rothko” was sold for £1,426,000 ($2,428,140), marking a significant milestone in his career.
• February 2016 saw the sale of "The Sunflowers of 1937" for £3,177,000 at Sotheby’s London – becoming his most expensive work sold to date. This painting is inspired by Vincent van Gogh's iconic “Sunflowers”.
