Slightly askew, concentric octagonal forms mimic ripples on the river’s surface and frame the iconic towers of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Made from steel reclaimed from the Tappan Zee Bridge, this sculpture is a tribute to the artist’s father. The New York State Thruway Authority partnered with ArtsWestchester and the Arts Council of Rockland to commission artwork across the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Path. The Public Art program includes five sculptures, four bicycle racks and a mural, all by New York artists.

Biografía del artista

Thomas Lendvai: Sculpting Presence from Industrial Materials

Thomas Lendvai is a Brooklyn-based artist whose distinctive approach to sculpture centers on transforming commonplace construction materials—concrete, steel, timber—into monumental, site-responsive artworks that explore themes of self and materiality. His practice defies easy categorization, blending elements of minimalism with an ambitious scale and a profound engagement with the inherent qualities of his chosen mediums. Lendvai’s work has garnered critical acclaim, appearing in publications like *The New Yorker* and *Artnet.com*, and he has exhibited extensively in galleries across North America, including Proto Gallery in Hoboken, New Jersey. His artistic journey began in Brooklyn, United States of America, where he was born in 1997. From a young age, Lendvai demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for both visual arts and legal pursuits—a duality that would shape his intellectual development and inform his creative process. Recognizing the importance of formal education, he pursued a law degree at NYU Stern School of Business alongside continued artistic exploration, fostering a meticulous attention to detail and analytical rigor crucial to his sculptural endeavors. This dual focus instilled in him not only legal acumen but also a deep understanding of structure and precision—qualities that directly translate into his monumental sculptures. Beyond academia, Lendvai honed his skills as a patent attorney at Patent Law Office Dr., showcasing an intellectual curiosity extending far beyond the realm of visual arts. Demonstrating a commitment to excellence in both fields, he balanced legal responsibilities with passionate artistic pursuits, establishing Tomco Design—a testament to his versatility and entrepreneurial spirit. Currently serving as Senior Patent Attorney at Patent Law Office Dr., Lendvai continues to refine his craft while upholding a steadfast dedication to legal integrity.

Sculptural Methodology & Conceptual Framework

Lendvai’s sculptural process is characterized by an uncompromising devotion to experimentation and observation. Rather than imposing preconceived notions onto his materials, he allows them to dictate the form of his sculptures—often resulting in striking juxtapositions of texture and geometry. He approaches each project with a methodical eye, meticulously studying the characteristics of concrete, steel, and timber – analyzing their grain patterns, structural integrity, and responsiveness to environmental conditions. This careful consideration isn’t merely about replicating existing forms; it's about distilling essence into materiality, prompting viewers to contemplate the relationship between structure, presence, and perception. He seeks to capture a feeling or state of being within the physicality of the material itself—a profound connection between form and substance that defines his artistic vision. His work isn’t simply decorative; it’s imbued with conceptual depth. Lendvai draws inspiration from minimalist sculpture traditions while simultaneously pushing boundaries through monumental scale and site-specific interventions. He recognizes that art possesses the capacity to convey complex ideas—to provoke contemplation about our place in the world and to challenge conventional understandings of beauty. This ambition is reflected in his installations, which are designed to interact dynamically with their surroundings, adapting to architectural spaces and engaging viewers in a dialogue about scale and context.

Recognition & Exhibitions

Lendvai’s artistic vision has been acknowledged by prominent institutions and publications. He gained considerable recognition when *The New Yorker* featured his work—demonstrating the breadth of his influence within the art world—and *Artnet.com* solidified his presence in the digital landscape. His sculptures have graced galleries such as Proto Gallery in Hoboken, NJ, attracting critical acclaim and establishing him as a rising talent amongst contemporary sculptors. These exhibitions represent not only opportunities for artistic dissemination but also validations of his dedication to exploring innovative approaches to sculptural expression.

Influences & Artistic Legacy

While Lendvai’s artistic style remains distinctly personal, it speaks to broader concerns about materiality and the human condition. He acknowledges the impact of minimalist sculpture movements on his creative process—recognizing their emphasis on simplicity and geometric precision as guiding principles. Simultaneously, he pushes boundaries through monumental scale and site-specific interventions—challenging viewers to reconsider conventional notions of beauty and prompting reflection on the relationship between art and environment. His exploration of self within material form contributes to a continuing conversation about art’s capacity to convey profound ideas—a legacy that promises to resonate throughout his career and inspire future generations of sculptors.
