Descripción de la obra

24 by 12 m. An area that Sten Lex know very well. A return to the Outdoor festival on the same façade the artists worked on in its first edition, when they expressed a need to leave a permanent mark in Garbatella (a neighbourhood in Rome) that in 2010 has housed, but most importantly welcomed, the birth of the festival. The developmental path of the two artists has been a long journey; from small to large surfaces, their artistic research has been through a lot of changes, an evolution and maturity that has seen them leave the figurative world. From the footballer Totti’s huge face emerging from rips to cover the whole façade of this same building, through experimentations with anonymous portraits, they are now landing in a world where common references no longer exist. After a footnote (still in the making) of abstract lines, confused and undefined marks, and which is still very much part of their journey, comes a time of broken traits and geometry, and perhaps even a hint of colour. Their wavy lines and half-circles, like stamps, seal their return to Rome and the power of this entire operation, realised through crowdfunding. This wall represents the first public artwork realized thanks to donations from common people. This wall is the epilogue to a story with many characters; a wonderful story that has seen Sten Lex return to the same façade and show their artistic evolution. But it has also seen the festival grow and establish itself, with the active participation of a public that for the first time is not just a spectator but a real supporter, a patron. This time the trail left behind has different footprints.

Biografía del artista

Sten & Lex: Pioneers of Halftone Stencil Graffiti

Sten & Lex, born in Rome and Taranto in 1982, represent a significant force within the contemporary street art movement, specifically recognized for their innovative halftone stencil technique. Their collaborative journey began in 2001, establishing them as prominent figures in Italian stencil graffiti and propelling them onto an international stage marked by prestigious festivals and museum exhibitions. This duo’s distinctive style—characterized by meticulously crafted portraits of anonymous individuals rendered in a striking halftone pattern—has garnered considerable acclaim and cemented their place within the broader landscape of urban art. Their artistic genesis unfolded amidst the vibrant energy of Roman graffiti culture, where Sten & Lex honed their skills experimenting with diverse mediums before decisively embracing stencil printing as their primary expressive tool. This pivotal decision wasn’t merely stylistic; it reflected a profound engagement with the ethos of street art—a rejection of formal academic training and an embrace of spontaneous creativity—values that continue to permeate their artistic practice.

The Halftone Technique: A Revelation in Texture

At the core of Sten & Lex's aesthetic lies the halftone stencil technique – a process that leverages screens to generate textured images by selectively applying ink. This ingenious method achieves remarkable detail and tonal gradation, resulting in portraits that convincingly mirror their subjects while simultaneously conveying an aura of mystery and abstraction. The meticulous adjustment of screen angles and ink densities is paramount to capturing these nuanced shading effects, elevating Sten & Lex’s work beyond mere visual representation. They skillfully employ this technique to imbue their prints with palpable realism—a testament to their dedication to mastering the subtleties of artistic expression.

Notable Collaborations & Recognition

Their involvement in the Cans Festival in London in 2008 solidified Sten & Lex's reputation within the global street art community, showcasing their ability to engage with influential figures like Banksy and establishing them as trailblazers in stencil graffiti. This collaborative effort underscored their commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and fostering dialogue about representation—values that resonate deeply within their oeuvre. Furthermore, their exhibitions at institutions such as MACRO Rome and Caradente Museum Spoleto have garnered international acclaim, recognizing Sten & Lex’s contribution to contemporary art and solidifying their position as artists whose work transcends geographical borders.

Beyond Technique: Symbolism and Narrative Depth

While primarily focused on portraiture—often depicting anonymous individuals rendered in grayscale—Sten & Lex's artistic vision extends beyond mere visual aesthetics. They subtly incorporate symbolic elements—references to cultural heritage or personal narratives—that enrich the viewer’s understanding of their prints, transforming them into evocative explorations of identity and experience. This deliberate layering of meaning underscores Sten & Lex’s belief that art possesses the capacity to provoke contemplation and foster empathy within communities—a conviction that informs their ongoing artistic endeavors.

Legacy: Shaping Contemporary Street Art

Sten & Lex's pioneering use of halftone stencil printing has profoundly impacted the street art landscape, inspiring countless artists to adopt similar techniques. Their influence transcends stylistic imitation; they champion a philosophy rooted in social commentary and visual experimentation—values that continue to define their artistic legacy. As artists who operate within the realm of public space, Sten & Lex engage directly with societal concerns regarding visibility and representation—a commitment that underscores their enduring significance as figures shaping the trajectory of contemporary art.
