The Painter of Alkmaar

In the quiet streets of Alkmaar, Zacharias Paulusz spent his life observing the faces of his neighbors. He was a portrait painter of the Dutch Golden Age, a man whose hand was often guided by the needs of the local civic guards. His work was not about grand abstractions but about the men who stood in line for duty. He signed his canvases with a simple monogram, ZP fecit, a quiet mark left on the works he completed between the turn of the century and his death in 1648.

His brush captured the shifting social structures of a city in transition. Before the Reformation, the militias were tied to the saints, known as the militias of St. George and St. Sebastian. As the religious landscape changed and the guards became secularized, the old names remained in memory. Paulusz painted the "Old guard" in 1615, following the work of Frans Menton, who had focused on the "New guard." He continued to document these men in 1621, 1627, 1628, 1629, and 1630, recording the faces of the community as they organized themselves into new companies.

The Civic Guard Portraits

His commissions often involved recording the presence of local militia units. In 1621, he painted the officers of the old civic guard, a task that required a specific arrangement of figures. The cost for this work was 195 guilders, with 15 guilders assigned to each man depicted in the scene.

His brushwork captured the specific details of the men in these groups:

  • The officers and standard-bearers of the two companies of the old civic guard.
  • The orange and the blue companies of the local militia.
  • The likenesses of men such as Lieutenant Eduart Jacot and Lieutenant Seger Dircksz Goudsmid.
  • The presence of figures like provost Maarten Adriaenfsz. Stuyling.

Working in the Baroque style, he focused on the weight of the human form and the way light settles on a subject. His life remained in Alkmaar from his birth around 1570-1590 until 1648. He did not look toward the heavens, but instead turned his attention to the men who walked the streets of his city, documenting them as they were in their own time.
