The Life of Lorenzo De Caro

Lorenzo De Caro was an Italian painter active in the late Baroque style in his native city of Naples. His biographical information is sparse, though he was likely a pupil of Francesco Solimena and adopted the brilliant painterly effects and bold brushwork of Solimena’s late style. He married Anna Mariana Bozza in 1743, and the couple had ten children. De Caro lived and worked in Naples, with his studio located in Vicolo della Porta piccola del Rosario.

His professional activity included work for various Neapolitan churches and palazzi. Some of his known works include:

  • Paintings for the parish church of Cassino
  • Work in the church of the Cesarea in Naples
  • Canvases depicting saints in Santi Filippo e Giacomo, Naples
  • The Conversion of St. Paul and the Triumph of Judith
  • The Immaculate Conception

In the province of Frosinone, he painted for the parish church of Piedimonte San Germano and the church of Holy Mary “dell’Olivella” in S. Elia Fiumerapido.
