The Life and Career of Kate Beard
Kate Beard was a British artist who lived from 1867 to 1941. Her presence in the art world was most felt during her active years between 1885 and 1919. She worked primarily with oil on canvas, leaving behind a record of her hand in various studies and portraits.
The brushwork of Kate Beard often focused on the quiet presence of animals. She spent her time capturing the specific textures of fur and the steady gaze of dogs. Her work moved through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, finding a place within collections like those held by the National Trust. She signed her pieces simply as Kate Beard, a mark left on works that studied the character of a Greyhound or a Bloodhound.
Notable Works and Artistic Subjects
Much of her focus rests on the quiet presence of animals. In 'Speed', Portrait of a Greyhound, she captures the specific character of the breed, while 'Rita, Portrait of a Dog is an oil painting on canvas that she signed simply as Kate Beard. These studies of animals often involve a close look at their forms and the way they hold themselves. She also painted 'Clare', a Dark Bay Horse in a Landscape, placing the animal within a wider setting.
Her subjects extend to more structured compositions and studies of form. 'Lady Bountiful' is another notable piece from her repertoire. Whether working with the textures of a coat or the lines of a landscape, her hand is visible in the way she approaches her subjects. She often signed her work with her name, Kate Beard, marking her finished pieces.
Where to See the Works Today
The National Trust maintains several of her paintings within its collections. You can find her studies of animals among these holdings, including 'Speed', Portrait of a Greyhound' and 'Rita, Portrait of a Dog'. These works sit alongside 'Lady Bountiful' and 'Clare', a Dark Bay Horse in a Landscape, which is also held by the Trust.
A specific portion of her output is kept at Mount Stewart in Newtownards. This collection includes two of her works, allowing for a closer look at her focus on animal subjects within the context of the estate's history.
