The lines of a life in Kassa

Born in 1834 in the city of Kassa, Jenő Doby spent his early years learning to see through the eyes of his uncle, the archaeologist Imre Henszlmann. It was a childhood shaped by the careful observation required for drawing. His hands first learned the discipline of the copperplate under Alajos Fuchsthaler in Pest, a skill that would later define much of his output. He moved through the studios of Europe, finding himself in Vienna to study with Farkas Bőhm and eventually traveling to Rome to copy the works of old masters. These years were spent in quiet imitation, absorbing the weight and texture of established traditions.

By 1855, his path led him to Paris, where he worked within the studio of Gleyre and later studied architectural engraving with Sondain. While he began his career focusing on painting, a shift occurred around 1860. The broad strokes of the brush gave way to the precise, biting needle of the engraver. He found a different kind of truth in the etched line. This transition brought him back to significant historical subjects, such as the task of engraving Engerth's The Battle of Zenta under a scholarship in 1867.

A career of precision and teaching

Doby’s work often centered on the recording of history and the faces of his era. He took on commissions that required immense technical control, producing engravings for the Hungarian Academy of Science and the Hungarian Archeological Society. His needle captured the likenesses of figures like Count Gyula Andrássy and Admiral Tegethoff, translating flesh and uniform into the stark language of black and white. In 1873, he took on the responsibility of supervising the Hungarian Art Exhibition at the World Fair in Vienna.

Later life saw him returning to Budapest, where his role shifted from student and traveler to mentor. In 1884, he was appointed a professor of engraving at the Academy of Applied Arts. He spent much of his time shaping the hands of the next generation of graphic artists. His technical skill earned him recognition in international circles, including a first class medal in Antwerp in 1894 and an honorable mention in Paris in 1895.

The breadth of his technical reach included:

  • Copperplate engraving for historical documentation
  • Etching and architectural graphic art
  • Portraiture capturing contemporary Hungarian personalities
  • Painting influenced by his time in Italy and France

He passed away in 1907 at Portore. His legacy remains held within the collections of the Hungarian National Gallery, where the physical traces of his engravings continue to show the meticulous labor of a man who lived through the transition from classical training to the era of post-impressionism.
