Early Life, Family and Artistic Training
Franciszek Tepa was born on 17 September 1829 in Lwów. He was the son of a confectioner, a background that offered a quiet beginning before his formal entry into the arts. His creative path began in earnest at the Akademia Stanowa, where he studied under Jan Maszkowski between 1842 and 1844. These early years provided the foundational discipline required for the rigorous academic training that would follow across the major European centers of art.
His education was a nomadic pursuit of technical mastery. From 1847 to 1848, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, working under the guidance of Ferdinand Waldmüller. This was followed by a period in Munich, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1849 to 1852 under Wilhelm von Kaulbach. Such a diverse pedigree of instruction allowed him to absorb various European approaches to form and composition.
The final significant chapter of his formal schooling took place in Paris. Between 1854 and 1860, he attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. During these years, he refined his technique under the instruction of Ary Scheffer and Léon Cogniet. This extensive period of study across Vienna, Munich, and Paris equipped him with the versatile skills that would later define his professional career.
Political Involvement and Orientalist Travels
The political currents of the mid-19th century deeply intersected with Tepa’s personal convictions. During the Revolutions of 1848, he became actively involved in the independence movement, a commitment that carried significant personal cost. While in the Austro-Hungarian capital of Vienna, his political activities led to his imprisonment, where he was held as a political prisoner.
This period of upheaval was followed by a transformative period of travel. In 1852, Tepa set out on an expedition through Greece, Egypt, and Palestine. He was accompanied by the Galician separatist Adam Józef Potocki, his wife, and the journalist Maurycy Mann. This excursion provided him with a wealth of inspiration, resulting in some of the earliest examples of Polish Orientalism. These travels allowed him to move beyond European traditions and engage with the aesthetics of the East.
His preoccupation with national identity also manifested in his portraiture. Tepa produced a series of portraits documenting the leaders of the November Uprising, capturing the likenesses of figures such as Joachim Lelewel, Józef Dwernicki, and Józef Chłopicki. Through these works, he sought to preserve the faces of the Polish independence movement.
Life in Lwów and Artistic Commissions
Following his return from Paris in 1860, Tepa chose to settle permanently in Lwów. This decision reflected a deep-seated connection to the region, a preference that was confirmed when he was offered a Professorship at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts. He declined the prestigious position, choosing instead to remain in Lwów and continue his work within the local community.
His time in Lwów was marked by significant commissions that captured the essence of the surrounding landscape and its people. On behalf of Count Włodzimierz Dzieduszycki, a founder of the State Museum of Natural History, Tepa produced various studies of local folk-life and landscapes. These works provided a visual record of the vernacular life and natural scenery of the area.
While his interests were broad, Tepa developed a particular reputation for his portraiture. He became widely known for his skill in creating miniatures painted on ivory, a delicate and demanding medium. His technical precision in these small-scale works secured his place among the prominent artists of his time, even as he maintained his focus on the specific social and natural realities of his home.
