Early Life, Family and Training
Antonie Louis Koster was born on 8 August 1859 in Terneuzen, Netherlands. He was the son of Willem Theodorus Koster and Pieternella Catharina Noske. His early years were shaped by the quiet movements of his family, as his father’s work eventually led them toward The Hague. It was here that his interest in drawing began to take a more formal shape.
His first guidance came from C. Gerritsen, a drawing teacher at the Hogereburgerschool in Den Haag. This early instruction provided the foundation for his technical development. Following these initial lessons, he entered the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag, where he remained a student until 1883. During this period of study, he focused on the mechanics of line and form, eventually moving into the more precise discipline of printmaking. He sought out Charles Louis Philippe Zilcken to receive specific lessons in etching, a practice that would remain a constant part of his technical repertoire.
Residences and Periods of Activity
His professional life was shaped by the shifting landscapes of the Netherlands. Between 1880 and 1885, he was based in Den Haag, specifically in the Scheveningen area. During this time, from 1883 to 1884, he left the coast to travel through the Pyrenees. This period of movement preceded a settled time in Rijswijk, Zuid-Holland, where he lived and worked from 1886 until 1890.
The years following his time in Rijswijk saw him moving through several different towns. He resided in Haarlem until 1895, before a period of residence in Gaanderen and ’s-Heerenberg between 1898 and 1902. He eventually returned to Haarlem, staying there until 1905. After this, he settled in Heemstede, where he remained for the rest of his active years.
Technique and Artistic Style
Koster’s approach to the canvas was rooted in the Impressionist tradition, focusing on the immediate presence of light and the rhythm of the landscape. He often worked with a luminous palette, using large areas of flat color to define the geometry of the land. This method allowed him to capture the seasonal intensity of the Dutch countryside, particularly during the brief window when the bulb fields are in full bloom. His work emphasizes the visual repetition found in rows of flowers, turning the landscape into a study of color and light rather than a mere detailed record.
His technical range was broad, moving between the precision of graphic arts and the fluidity of painting. He was a practiced etcher and draughtsman, often using pen and ink to capture the lines of cityscapes or the delicate structures of nature. In his more painterly works, he utilized oil on canvas, pastel, and watercolor to build up his compositions. This versatility allowed him to transition from the structured, rhythmic patterns of a tulip field to the more atmospheric qualities of a landscape or a city view.
Notable Works and Subjects
Koster focused much of his attention on the landscape, finding particular interest in the seasonal shifts of the Dutch countryside. He spent much of his time capturing the blooming tulip fields and bulb fields that stretch across the land near Haarlem. These scenes often relied on the geometry of the rows to create a sense of rhythm across the canvas. His work frequently sought to catch the specific light of the spring season, documenting the brief period when the earth is covered in color.
Beyond the open fields, he turned his eye toward the structured lines of urban life. In 1892, he produced an album containing 12 etchings that depicted various views of the old city of Den Haag. These graphic works show a different side of his practice, moving from the expansive nature of the bulb fields to the detailed architecture of the city streets. His ability to translate these views into etchings allowed him to explore the textures of the built environment.
His oil paintings often utilized a palette that emphasized the immediate presence of color. One such work, titled PAARSCHE EN ROODE DARWIN TULPEN, was executed in oil on canvas and laid down on board. Through his various mediums, including pastel and watercolor, he maintained a consistent interest in the way light interacts with the natural world.
Professional Memberships and Circles
His presence in the Dutch art scene was marked by his involvement in several established circles. In The Hague, he was a member of Pulchri Studio. His professional life also took him to Haarlem, where he joined 'Kunst zij ons doel' (Art be us Doel), and to Amsterdam, where he was part of 'Arti et Amicitiae'. These affiliations placed him among the active practitioners of his time, moving through the various artistic hubs of the Netherlands.
The technical side of his practice found a home within the Dutch Etching Club. This membership reflects the time he spent refining his skills in printmaking and graphic arts. His social and professional circles were often tied to his physical locations, shifting as he moved between cities like Rijswijk, Haarlem, and Heemstede.
In his later years, his surroundings remained connected to the artistic community. From about 1924, he lived near the Dutch painter Louis Jacob Hartz. This proximity suggests a life lived in close contact with the quiet, steady rhythms of fellow painters.
Later Years and Death
In the later years of his life, Koster settled in Heemstede, where he remained until his passing. His personal life was marked by his marriage to Bastiana Elisabeth Jongbloed, a union that took place on 8 August 1890 in The Hague. This period of his life saw him living near the painter Louis Jacob Hartz, as he continued his presence in the Dutch art landscape from his home in Heemstede.
He died on 28 May 1937. While some records place his death in Heemstede, Netherlands, his final resting place is in Haarlem, Netherlands. His life ended after decades of observing the shifting light across the Dutch landscape and the seasonal changes of the bulb fields.
