Hayter on graphic art and mural art at École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Became a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta, in 1960.

From 1971 to 1973, Roy served as the Principal of the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship.
Subsequently, he became a lecturer in painting at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, further solidifying his position within India’s art education system.
