From the 1960s to the 1980s, Shigemura was active at the Shell Art Award, Japan Art Festival, The Hakone Open-Air Museum Grand Prize Exhibition, the Exhibition of the Contemporary Japanese Sculpture (UBE Biennale) and other exhibitions. His work includes designing the window displays for Wako in Ginza. Making free use of a technique named “katametaju (solidification),” in which the molds are made directly from the human body or a real object and cast in reinforced plastic, he developed expressions full of humor and satire. If you look towards the left at the front entrance of the museum, you will see a woman with long hair about to climb the emergency stairs leading to the outdoor exhibition space while casting her eyes in this direction. If you go there, you will find that this woman covered in silver gray is made so realistically from the top of her head to the tips of her toes that you might even be able to see her pores. There is another woman in a woolen cap with a knapsack on her back walking down and yet another woman sitting on the landing with her elbows on her knees. Altogether three people form this oxidized silver group made for this stairway by Mitsuo Shigemura, the “katametaju” master of solidifying things exactly like the real thing. It is just like a real scene, but if you look carefully, there is an impossible trick to it. The mysterious bare tree in the shrubbery you come across if you walk around the museum building to the right of the front entrance is another work by the same artist that you may overlook if you pass by absentmindedly. The Essence of Form: The Sculptural Legacy of Mitsuo Shigemura

Born in the vibrant metropolis of Tokyo in 1936, Mitsuo Shigemura emerged as a transformative force in the landscape of twentieth-century Japanese sculpture. His artistic odyssey began with rigorous academic training at the prestigious Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he earned his degree in 1960. This foundational period provided him with the technical mastery required to navigate the complexities of three-dimensional space, yet it was his subsequent journey to France that would truly expand his creative consciousness. Immersing himself in the atmosphere of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Shigemura found profound inspiration in the stylistic legacy of Auguste Rodin. This encounter with European modernism instilled in him a deep appreciation for expressive form and the subtle nuances of texture, elements that would later become hallmarks of his unique sculptural language.

As his career progressed, Shigemura developed a distinctive aesthetic characterized by a deliberate embrace of abstraction and minimalism. Moving away from the ornate traditions of the past, he sought to distill artistic concepts into their purest, most elemental essence. He became a master of geometric simplicity, utilizing shapes such as cubes and spheres alongside understated lines to communicate profound ideas. His work was never merely decorative; rather, it served as a vessel for emotion and contemplation. By stripping away narrative clutter, Shigemlar allowed the weight, balance, and stillness of his materials to speak directly to the viewer, creating a meditative experience that transcended simple visual observation.

Innovation through Solidification and Realism

While much of his reputation rests upon geometric abstraction, Shigemura possessed a remarkable ability to pivot between the abstract and the hyper-realistic. One of his most fascinating technical contributions was his mastery of a process known as katametaju, or solidification. Through this innovative technique, he created molds directly from the human body or real objects, casting them in reinforced plastic to capture life with startling precision. This method allowed him to explore themes of humor and satire, presenting figures that were so lifelike they seemed to possess a breathing presence within a gallery space.

A breathtaking example of this technical prowess can be found in his work for the Stairway installation, where he created a group of oxidized silver figures. These sculptures—ranging from a woman climbing stairs to a figure resting on a landing—were rendered with such meticulous detail that even the texture of skin and pores was palpable. This duality in his oeuvre—the ability to move from the mathematical precision of a sphere to the uncanny realism of a human form—demonstrates the incredible breadth of his artistic vision. It is this tension between the permanent, geometric ideal and the fleeting, captured moment of life that defines much of his most celebrated work.

Recognition and Lasting Impact

Throughout the decades spanning from the 1960s to the 1980s, Shigemura was a constant and respected presence in the international art circuit. His contributions were recognized through participation in prestigious venues such as the Shell Art Award, the Japan Art Festival, and the UBE Biennale (Exhibition of the Contemporary Japanese Sculpture). His ability to integrate art into the fabric of daily life was further evidenced by his design work for iconic locations like Wako in Ginza, where his window displays brought sculptural elegance to the public eye.

The historical significance of Mitsuo Shigemura lies in his role as a bridge between traditional Japanese sensibilities and the global movement toward modern abstraction. His sculptures do more than occupy space; they command it, inviting viewers into a state of quiet reflection. Whether through the stark beauty of a stone monolith or the satirical charm of a plasticized human figure, Shigemura’s work remains a testament to the power of form to evoke the profound, leaving an indelible mark on the history of contemporary Japanese art.
