From the Artist: I had been working as an event planner at a retreat center for 13 years when Covid hit. All our events were canceled, soon after I was furloughed, and finally, I was let go. As a single woman, I was cast into isolation at the exact moment I needed community the most. To cope and stay busy, I developed a daily studio routine and offered art classes online to children. As a painter for 30 years, there is a blessing in having the prolonged quiet of quarantine. In this time, I have completed three self-portraits. The second, Portal, was painted during April and May of 2020. This painting reflected both my inner and outer experience. At the time, the economy was shut down and there was a pervasive sense that perhaps we were experiencing a sea change. As everyone went home, and a deep silence came over every neighborhood, there was a simultaneous hope in the air that perhaps a new way of being in the world could emerge, a phoenix from the ashes - a rebirth. I too was in the process of reinventing myself after losing my work. My world had been lost and I was thrust into finding a new identity. Portal is about moving from states of struggle and darkness toward a hopeful future.

A Life Rooted in the Hudson Valley Landscape

Erin Koch is an artist whose work breathes with the quiet energy of the natural world, specifically the evocative landscapes of New York’s Hudson Valley. While her professional journey encompasses both art education and anthropological study, it's the interplay between these disciplines—a deep observation of place combined with a sensitivity to human connection—that defines her compelling artistic vision. Koch isn’t simply *depicting* scenery; she is translating an experience, a feeling of belonging, and a reverence for the delicate balance within ecosystems.

For over two decades, Koch has nurtured young artists, currently as a middle school art teacher at Oakwood Friends School in Spackenkill. This dedication to fostering creativity underscores her belief in art’s transformative power—its ability to uplift, beautify, and ignite the imagination. Her own artistic practice is deeply informed by this pedagogy; she approaches each canvas with a sense of playful exploration and a commitment to process. Koch's early influences include masters like Graham Nickson and Martin Puryear, with whom she apprenticed, absorbing their techniques and philosophies.

The Ethnographic Eye: Science, Health, and Sustainability

Koch’s background in anthropology is not merely academic; it permeates her artistic approach. Her primary interest lies in ethnographic studies of science, technology, medicine, and health inequalities—a focus that translates into a nuanced understanding of the relationship between humans and their environment. This perspective informs her recent explorations of experiences with health in relation to agriculture, suggesting a growing concern for sustainability and the interconnectedness of ecological well-being and human flourishing.

Her work often engages with themes of cultural studies and global health, subtly prompting viewers to consider their own place within larger systems. This isn’t didactic art; rather, it's an invitation to contemplation—a gentle urging to recognize the beauty and fragility of the world around us. Koch’s involvement with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals further demonstrates her commitment to using art as a vehicle for positive change.

Watercolor as Meditation: Technique and Style

Koch primarily works in watercolor, a medium that lends itself beautifully to her delicate aesthetic. Her paintings are characterized by rich color palettes and an attentive sensitivity to light and shadow. Each piece begins with meticulous drawing studies followed by careful color explorations before culminating in the final work on archival watercolor paper. This deliberate process reflects a meditative approach—a slowing down and deep engagement with the subject matter.

Her landscapes aren’t hyperrealistic representations; instead, they capture an *essence* of place—the feeling of sunlight filtering through trees, the gentle curve of a riverbank, the subtle shifts in color as the day progresses. This emphasis on atmosphere and emotion is further enhanced by her use of layering and glazing techniques, creating depth and luminosity within each composition.

Community Engagement and Recent Achievements

Koch’s artistic practice extends beyond the studio; she actively engages with her community through exhibitions and collaborations. Her work has been featured in numerous art centers and galleries throughout the Hudson Valley, including Stonecrop Gardens, Garrison Art Center, and Cunneen Hackett Art Center. In 2023, she participated in a summer residency at Stonecrop Gardens, culminating in an inaugural exhibition of her paintings.

Notably, Koch’s watercolor ‘Blue Magnolia’ was selected as a finalist in the Millbrook Vineyard Wine Label Competition, demonstrating her ability to connect with audiences on both an aesthetic and emotional level. Her participation in Art in the Loft, a fundraiser for Arts Mid-Hudson, further highlights her commitment to supporting local arts initiatives.

A Growing Legacy: Bridging Disciplines

Erin Koch’s work represents a compelling synthesis of artistic talent, anthropological insight, and a deep reverence for the natural world. Her paintings are not simply beautiful objects; they are invitations to contemplation—gentle reminders of our interconnectedness with the environment and each other. As she continues to develop her practice, exploring new themes and pushing the boundaries of her medium, Koch is poised to become an increasingly influential voice in contemporary art.
