Kristen “Kraesten” Iversen (1886 – 1955): A Pioneer of Bornholm Landscape Painting and Stained Glass Art

Kristen “Kraesten” Iversen, born in Holstebro, Denmark on January 26, 1886, stands as a prominent figure within Danish art history—specifically recognized for his masterful contributions to both landscape painting and the creation of stunning stained glass windows. His artistic journey spanned nearly seven decades, culminating in a distinguished career marked by academic leadership and prolific output across diverse mediums. Iversen’s formative years were spent honing his skills at the Copenhagen Technical College between 1904 and 1905, providing him with a foundational understanding of artistic principles. He swiftly gained recognition as an artist during the 1910–1918 Artists' Autumn Exhibition and subsequently showcased his talent at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1919. These early exhibitions established Iversen’s presence within the burgeoning Danish art scene and foreshadowed his future success. A pivotal moment arrived in 1920 when he embarked on his inaugural visit to Bornholm, an island renowned for its ethereal light and vibrant natural hues. This experience profoundly impacted Iversen's artistic sensibilities, inspiring him to translate the island’s distinctive atmosphere onto canvas—a stylistic hallmark that would define much of his oeuvre. His landscapes became celebrated for their luminous colours and evocative depictions of the Danish countryside. Between 1927 and 1931, Iversen undertook an ambitious project: decorating the royal hall at Christiansborg Palace with a monumental painted ceiling fresco. This undertaking demanded exceptional technical skill and artistic vision—a testament to his dedication and mastery. Furthermore, he initiated his foray into stained glass artistry by designing windows for Risskov Church, followed by equally impressive creations in the north chapel of Fårevejle Church and the Danish church in Buenos Aires. These commissions solidified Iversen’s reputation as a versatile artist capable of transforming architectural spaces with breathtaking visual narratives. Beyond these monumental projects, Iversen embellished numerous buildings throughout Denmark—including Aarhus City Hall and Sankt Nicolai Church in Svendborg—demonstrating his unwavering commitment to artistic innovation and beautification. He was awarded the Eckersberg Medal in 1923, recognizing his exceptional talent and furthering his academic standing. In 1932, he ascended to the rank of Knight Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog, acknowledging his contributions to Danish culture and society. From 1930 until his passing on August 9, 1955, Iversen served as Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later Director from 1949–1952—leaving an indelible mark on Danish artistic education and fostering generations of artists.
