Über den Künstler

Mikael Melbye: From Opera Stage to Master Painter

Mikael Melbye, born in Copenhagen on March 15th, 1955, embodies a remarkable artistic duality—a celebrated opera singer and a prolific painter whose canvases bear the indelible mark of both theatrical grandeur and serene landscapes. His lineage traces back to Anton Melbye (1843-1927), a Danish Romantic painter renowned for his depictions of Norwegian folklore and national identity, establishing a connection to a rich artistic tradition that profoundly shaped Melbye’s formative years. From early childhood, he nurtured a passion for art instilled by his mother, a watercolorist who fostered his initial appreciation for color and texture—skills that would prove invaluable throughout his multifaceted career. His musical journey commenced in earnest with studies under Kirsten Hermansen and continued with influential mentors like Kay Christensen (renowned for his portrait of Karen Blixen), Richard Schmid and Francis Cunningham – artists who instilled in him a meticulous approach to observation and representation, mirroring the precision demanded by both opera performance and painting. This dedication culminated in his debut as an operatic baritone at the Royal Danish Theatre in 1975 with Mozart’s “Cosi fan tutte,” marking the beginning of an illustrious international opera career. He swiftly gained acclaim for performances of Figaro in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," cementing his position among the elite ranks of operatic singers worldwide. Over fifty roles graced his repertoire, earning him a ranking amongst the top 15 highest-paid performers globally and securing prestigious engagements at venues such as La Scala, San Carlo, Rome Opera, Covent Garden and The Met in New York City. Cd’s include recordings of “The Magic Flute” with Sir Colin Davies and “Carmen” with Herbert von Karajan—testaments to his vocal prowess and artistic vision. Beyond the spotlight, Melbye pursued a parallel path as a stage director and portrait painter. Notably, he created an official portrait of Queen Margrethe II, which hangs prominently in Christiansborg Palace’s drabantsalen – a testament to his ability to capture regal dignity and nuance. In 1996, he received the Order of Dannebrog Knight insignia—a recognition of his contributions to Danish culture and artistic excellence. His artistic transformation occurred in 2014 when he consciously relinquished theatrical endeavors to dedicate himself exclusively to painting. Since then, he has experienced considerable demand for full-scale classical Oil portraits across Denmark and internationally. His paintings are showcased in museums and private collections throughout Europe, the United States and Australia—reflecting his enduring commitment to capturing beauty and emotion on canvas.
