Félix Nadar: Ein Pionier der Fotografie

Frühes Leben und Anfänge

Geboren: Gaspard-Félix Tournachon am 5. April 1820 in Paris (obwohl einige Quellen Lyon nennen).
Sein Vater, Victor Tournachon, war Drucker und Buchhändler.
Er studierte zunächst Medizin, gab dies aber aufgrund finanzieller Schwierigkeiten nach dem Tod seines Vaters auf.
Nadar, wie er bekannt wurde, begann seine Karriere als Karikaturist und Schriftsteller und trug zu verschiedenen Zeitungen bei.

Von Karikaturen zur Fotografie

Er begann um 1853 mit der Experimentiererei mit Fotografie.
Er eröffnete 1854 sein erstes Fotoatelier in der Rue St. Lazare 113, zog später 1860 nach Boulevard des Capucines 35.
Schnell erlangte er Anerkennung für seine eindrucksvollen und psychologisch aufschlussreichen Porträts.
Ablehnung der Konvention: Nadar verzichtete auf die opulente Hintergrundkulisse, die in der Porträtfotografie üblich war, und bevorzugte natürliches Licht und den Fokus auf die Persönlichkeit des Motivs.

Pionierarbeit in der Luftbildfotografie

Im Jahr 1858 wurde Nadar zum ersten Mal als Fotograf mit Ballons Luftaufnahmen machte.
Er überwand technische Herausforderungen im Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung von fotografischen Platten in großer Höhe, indem er eine gasdichte Baumwollabdeckung für seine Ballonkorbe erfand.
Er pioniererte auch künstliches Licht in der Fotografie, insbesondere in den Pariser Katakomben.
Le Géant: Er ließ den Bau eines riesigen Ballons namens “Le Géant” (Der Riese) im Jahr 1863 in Auftrag geben, der Jules Verneys *Fünf Wochen in einem Luftschiff* inspirierte.

Wichtige Leistungen und Einflüsse

Porträtfotografie: Er fotografierte zahlreiche prominente Persönlichkeiten, darunter Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire, Sarah Bernhardt und Gustave Courbet.
Er errichtete während der Belagerung von Paris (1870-71) den ersten Luftpostdienst mit Ballonflügen.
Er veranstaltete 1874 die erste Impressionistenausstellung in seinem Atelier und bot so eine wichtige Plattform für aufstrebende Künstler.
Er veröffentlichte 1886 das erste Fotointerview, in dem der Chemiker Michel Eugène Chevreul vorgestellt wurde.

Spätes Leben und Vermächtnis

Er verlegte sein Atelier von 1895 bis 1909 nach Marseille.
Er starb am 20. März 1910 in Paris und wurde auf dem Père Lachaise-Friedhof beigesetzt.
Sein Sohn, Paul Nadar, führte das Atelier nach seinem Tod weiter.
Quand j’étais photographe: Er veröffentlichte eine Autobiografie, in der er über sein Leben und Werk reflektierte und wertvolle Einblicke in die Fotografie des 19. Jahrhunderts gab.
Historische Bedeutung: Nadars innovative Techniken und künstlerische Vision hatten einen tiefgreifenden Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Fotografie als Kunstform. Seine Porträts sind ikonische Darstellungen der Pariser intellektuellen und künstlerischen Kreise.
