Zhu Zhishan lived through the middle years of the Ming Dynasty, moving between the administrative duties of a magistrate and the quiet rhythms of a scholar. Born in Changzhou, within the region of today’s Suzhou, his life was shaped by the expectations of the imperial examination system. He passed the Provincial Exam in 1429, during the fifth year of the Hongzhi period, a step that led him to roles such as the Di
strict Magistrate of Xingning county in Guangdong province and later the Second-Class Sub-Prefect of Yingtian.
His hands were as accustomed to the brush for writing as they were to the responsibilities of office. In 1519, he stepped away from his official duties, claiming illness, to settle into a period of retirement.
