While his father, William Bradley, was a portrait painter who moved the family from Manchester to London seeking higher class commissions, it was within the landscapes and animal life surrounding them that Basil found his artistic calling.

The early years saw a relocation back to Manchester, where two sisters, Blanche and Julia, were born, followed by Maria in 1850, shaping a familial environment that would subtly influence Bradley’s later depictions of domestic scenes and everyday life.
