Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born in Antwerp, Belgium, André-Victor Lynen was the son of Alfred Lynen and Jeanne Pecher. His artistic inclinations were nurtured early through frequent visits to the studio of his maternal grandfather, the painter and sculptor Jules Pecher. Following his secondary education at the Royal Athenaeum of Antwerp, he pursued studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under the instruction of Isidore Meyers and Piet Verhaert. Through his connection to Verhaert, he developed a profound affinity for the sea, often visiting Oostduinkerke and becoming part of the informal "École de Nieuport" after acquiring his own studio in Nieuport.

During the First World War, Lynen served in the Belgian army, initially as a civic guard in the defense of Antwerp and later as an artilleryman in Great Britain. By 1916, he joined the "peintres du front" (painters of the front) as an observer, tasked with documenting the ravaged landscapes of Flanders through painting, drawing, and pen. Following the war, his life took him through France, including Versailles, Brittany, the Landes, and the Côte d'Azur, before he returned to Belgium to reside in La Hulpe and Brussels.
