Elmas Deniz (1981 –)

Turkish visual artist Elmas Deniz explores the entanglement of economy & nature through concept-driven works. Exhibited globally, her art examines societal impact.

“Sümerbank” takes its impetus from a plastic bag bearing the brand of the now-defunct Sümerbank stores, which the artist found among her mother’s belongings. Deniz used this found object from daily life as a handbag for a certain period of time, thus making it functional again. Later, as the bag got worn and ragged due to extensive use, the artist sewed it up with visible stitches. Transformed into an artwork, the repaired object reflects the physical marks of time, and the actions realised by the artist.
