Livet for Axl Leskoschek

A Life of Artistic and Political Conviction

Axl Leskoschek was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and theatre designer. Born in Graz, Austria-Ungarn, he was the son of a Feldmarschallleutnant. His early life was marked by significant upheaval; he studied law, served as a Fliegerleutnant during the First World War, and returned home with severe wounds. Following the war, he pursued his artistic training at the Landes-Kunstschule in Graz under Alfred Schrötter, later continuing his studies at the Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna between 1921 and 1923 under Alfred Cossmann.

His professional life was deeply intertwined with his political stances. He served as a cultural editor for the social democratic newspaper Arbeiterwille until 1934 and was a co-founder of the Werkbund Freiland and the Sezession in Graz. His graphic work earned him the Austrian State Prize in 1925. Due to his political involvement, including participation in the February uprising, he faced imprisonment in 1934, 1935, and 1936. In 1938, he fled Austria for Brazil, where he lived from 1941 to 1948, serving as a professor at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

Leskoschek's body of work includes diverse mediums, from woodcuts for the Insel-Bücherei series to monumental murals. One notable mural, Allegorie der Freunde, was created in 1937 for the Villa Albrecher-Leskoschek in Graz; this work utilized a surrealist and allegorical style to address the rise of National Socialism. After returning to Austria in 1948, he continued to navigate complex political landscapes.

His artistic contributions have been recognized through several honors, including:

He is buried in the honor grave group at the Vienna Central Cemetery. His life and character also served as the basis for the character Albert Trebla in Ulrich Becher's novel Die Murmeljagd.
