Commissions and Travel Posters

S.D. Panaiotaky worked closely with the Hong Kong Travel Association, creating imagery to promote the region to travelers. In 1935, the Association published a poster that helped define the visual identity of the area during that period. This work was part of a broader effort to market the destination through printed media.

A second version of this work exists, released by the A-O Line, also known as the Australia Oriental Line. This specific edition carries overprinted text intended to promote the ships SS Changte and SS Taiping. These vessels operated on routes connecting Sydney, Hong Kong, and Japan, marking the intersection of maritime travel and graphic design in the mid-1930s.

Key Works and Subject Matter

The work titled Hong Kong, the Riviera of the Orient captures a specific moment of transit along a steep, terraced pathway. In this scene, two Chinese men dressed in traditional clothing carry a Western tourist through a sedan chair. This method of transport was a common sight in the hills of Hong Kong during the 19th and early 20th centuries, used frequently to move people up the slopes toward The Peak. The composition places the viewer on a terrace, looking out over a panorama where the city descends toward the water. The landscape is framed by towering hills that meet a harbor filled with ships, including Chinese sailing junks on Victoria Harbour.

The visual details focus on the intersection of local custom and the presence of travelers. The sedan chair, a practical solution for the city's steep terrain, sits at the center of the movement. Beyond the immediate figures, the view extends to the bustling activity of the harbor. The ships and the layout of the city suggest a place defined by its relationship to the sea and its vertical geography. The composition uses the natural rise of the land to organize the view from the high terraces down to the water's edge.
