Early Life, Family and Training

Remo Brindisi was born in Rome on 25 April 1918. His early years were shaped by the hands of his father, a man skilled in the craft of wood carving. This practical training took place across Pescara and L'Aquila, where the tactile nature of carving likely informed his later approach to form. He moved through these spaces learning the discipline of working with physical materials under his father's guidance.

In 1935, he spent a short time at the Experimental Centre of Stage Design in Rome. This period of study provided a foundation before he moved toward more specialized technical training. He eventually obtained a grant to study at the Institute of Book Decoration and Illustration in Urbino. It was here that his focus sharpened toward the precision of graphic art and printmaking.

During his time in Urbino, he underwent a professional apprenticeship as an illustrator. This period of work required a steady hand and a focus on the mechanics of reproduction and design. By the time he completed his formal training, he had developed a technical command over the line and the printed image, moving from the wood-carving traditions of his youth toward the structured world of graphic illustration.

Artistic Activity in Florence and Venice

In 1940, Brindisi arrived in Florence, where his path crossed with Ardengo Soffici and Ottone Rosai. This period marked a significant step in his development, leading to his first solo exhibition in the city. The show was accompanied by a presentation by a prominent literary figure, marking his emergence within the local art scene.

Between 1943 and 1946, he lived in Venice. This time was defined by a growing presence in the exhibition circuit. He began to participate in large-scale shows, establishing a steady presence at the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennial. His work moved through the major private galleries of both Milan and Venice, building a network that connected his practice to the commercial centers of the era.

Style and Artistic Movements

The post-war years brought a shift toward Cubist painting, though his approach felt more existential and expressionistic than purely geometric. During this time, he joined the Gruppo di Linea alongside Gianni Dova and Ibrahim Kodra. His path later moved toward the realist movement, yet he maintained a sense of autonomy that kept him separate from the dominant trends of the era.

By the early 1960s, his work took on a heavy focus on social commitment and protest. This period saw him producing large paintings regarding the history of Fascism. In these pieces, he merged figurative painting with an expressionist character, drawing on methods modeled after Art Informel. The figures often felt flattened within a two-dimensional space, stripped of traditional depth.

As the 1970s and 1980s progressed, his palette became more intense. He used violent colors to define his subjects, continuing the repertoire of flattened, two-dimensional figures that had become a hallmark of his practice. His work remained focused on these specific visual tensions between form and color.

Later Years and Death

The later decades of his life were marked by institutional leadership and a continued presence in the Italian art scene. In 1972, he held the position of president of the Milan Trienniale. His involvement in art education followed, as he served as the director of the Macerata Academy of Fine Arts from 1981 to 1983.

His work during these years maintained a specific visual language, characterized by flattened figures in two-dimensional space and the use of intense, violent color. This approach continued through the 1980s. He passed away on 25 July 1996 at Lido di Spina.
