The Texture of Memory
In the quiet corners of Busan, South Korea, a fascination began with the small, hard shapes of everyday life. For Ran Hong, the button was never merely a fastener. It was a geometric pattern, a tactile object that held the potential for something more. This early interest in the way light hits a smooth surface or how a thread pulls through fabric set the stage for a practice defined by layering. She looks at these humble materials—buttons, beads, pins, and thread—and sees a way to build landscapes and floral motifs that feel heavy with time. Her work is a slow process of arrangement, where each piece is placed with a specific intent, turning a collection of objects into a meditation on what is lost and what remains.
Her formal training provided the technical language for these impulses. She studied printmaking at Hongik University in Seoul, earning her BFA in 2013, before moving into the realm of mixed media sculpture with an MFA from Seoul National University of Science & Technology in 2022. This transition from the flat surface of a print to the physical depth of sculpture allowed her to explore the tension between different materials. She uses the physical weight of her objects to ground her compositions, often working with a top-bottom structure that contrasts the natural world with more unsettling elements.
Materials and Contradictions
The work often moves between the beautiful and the difficult. In her series such as Pink Blossom, there is a tension between the ideal and the real. She explores how the pursuit of a perfect, superficial beauty can sometimes obscure a harsher reality. This is seen in her use of imagery like crocodiles, which she places within landscapes to represent a fragile, sacrificed existence. The compositions often blend the utopian with the dystopian, using the physical texture of her materials to make these abstract ideas feel tangible.
Her career has been marked by several key recognitions and placements:
- SeMA Nanji Residency in Seoul, Korea
- Hungary Artist Exchange Program in Budapest, Hungary
- Lee Sang Wook Prize from the Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association
- Selection for The 24th SongEun Art Award
- MMCA Young Exploration 2014
A Presence in Collections
The reach of her work extends far beyond her studio, finding its way into galleries in Switzerland, France, Dubai, and Singapore. Her pieces are not merely objects to be viewed but are held in significant collections that recognize the depth of her inquiry. Her work is part of the MMCA Government Art Bank and the MMCA Art Bank in Korea, as well as the Koo House Museum and the ARARIO Collection. Through these placements, her specific way of seeing—the way she assembles the small and the discarded into something that demands attention—continues to be documented and preserved.
