A Life Forged in Cincinnati

The early years of John Ellsworth Weis are defined by movement and the grit of labor. Born in Powell County, Kentucky, he moves to Higginsport, Ohio, as a child before settling in Norwood at age nine. The loss of his father leaves his mother to navigate the struggles of single parenthood, a reality that shapes the young man's drive. At fourteen, while working days as a soda fountain clerk, sign painter, and electric coil winder, he enrolls in night classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. This dual existence—manual labor by day and academic pursuit by night—builds the foundation for his future.

The faculty at the Academy provides the technical scaffolding for his talent. Under the guidance of Frank Duveneck, James Roy Hopkins, Lewis Henry Meakin, and Herman Henry Wessel, Weis develops a command over draftsmanship. His progress is rapid. By age twenty-two, he transitions from student to instructor, beginning a tenure on the faculty that would span thirty-eight years.

Expansion Across Borders

The 1920s bring a shift in perspective as Weis moves beyond the Ohio Valley. Following his service in the military during World War I, he travels to Europe. Paris becomes a central node in his artistic development. He exhibits at the Paris Salon and finds himself among a circle of artists including Elizabeth Nourse and James Roy Hopkins. This period introduces a broader geographic scope to his work.

His travels eventually pull him through the diverse landscapes of the United States. He captures scenes from:

  • Taos, New Mexico
  • Provincetown, Massachusetts
  • Woodstock, Massachusetts
  • Rockport, Massachusetts
  • Gloucester, Massachusetts
  • Booth Bay Harbor, Maine

Technique and Legacy

The work of Weis is characterized by a specific focus on atmospheric light and rich color. His subject matter remains grounded in the physical world, ranging from portraits like An Afro-American with Hat to impressionistic landscapes such as The Canal at Dusk. Whether painting the American West, New England, or France, he maintains a strong sense of structure through precise draftsmanship.

His professional life is deeply intertwined with the Cincinnati art community. He serves as President of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1927 to 1928 and holds memberships in several societies, including the Duveneck Society of Painters & sculptors and the Rockport Art Association. His marriage to Sally Cuthbert, an instructor at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, further cements his connection to the region's academic art circles.

The final years are marked by a forced departure from the classroom. In 1957, Parkinson's disease compels him to retire from the Art Academy. He passes away in 1962 following a fall in his home. He remains recognized as a leading Ohio regional painter of the twentieth century.
