Early Life, Family and Training

Henry Tilson was born in Yorkshire in 1659. He came from a family with deep roots in the church; his grandfather was Henry Tilson, who served as the Bishop of Elphin from 1576 to 1655. His father, Nathaniel Tilson, provided the immediate household into which Henry was born. These connections placed him within a specific social circle from his earliest years.

His path toward painting began in the studio of Sir Peter Lely. Henry Tilson did not merely observe from the sidelines; he worked for Lely, learning the mechanics of portraiture through direct practice. This apprenticeship provided the foundation for his later career in London. He spent his formative years absorbing the methods of the studio, preparing for a life spent capturing the likenesses of others.

Travels Through France, Venice and Rome

In 1684, Tilson left England for France. He was accompanied by Michael Dahl, a close friend and fellow artist. The two men moved through the Continent together, arriving in Rome in 1685. Their time in Italy was spent observing the works of the old masters. Tilson spent six or seven years in Italy, where he spent much of his time copying the paintings of Corregio, Titian, and the Caracci with a focus on exactness. During these years, he and Dahl exchanged portraits of one another while living in Rome.

The travels also took him to Venice. His time in these cities shaped how he would eventually handle color when he returned to London. He gained a specific understanding of the studio practices of the Venetian painter Sebastiano Bombelli, a knowledge he shared with others upon his return. His time in Paris also left a mark on his approach to color, adding to the technical skills he had gathered while studying in Italy.

Technique and Artistic Style

Tilson’s hand found its particular strength in the soft, tactile application of pastels. He specialized in pastel portraiture, a choice that allowed for a certain immediacy in capturing the likeness of his sitters. This preference for dry media was paired with a specific genius for crayons. He applied them with a precision that suggested a deep familiarity with the way the pigment settles into the grain of the surface, often working in a manner that mirrored the masters he had studied in Rome.

His approach to color was shaped by his time in Paris. The influence of the French style brought a different sensibility to his palette, moving him toward a more nuanced use of tone. While some contemporary accounts describe his oil works as having a stiff and heavy quality, his skill with crayons and pastels offered a different texture altogether. He sought to replicate the effects of the great masters, such as Titian and the Carracci, through a careful and exact imitation of their color and form.

Notable Commissions and Portraits

Tilson’s brush captured many faces of the era, often reflecting the social standing of his sitters. One such work is his portrait of Giuseppe Francesco Borri, painted around 1686 or 1687. He also turned his attention to Hon Thomas Arundell, capturing his likeness for posterity. These commissions suggest a steady stream of work from individuals of influence during his time in London.

His work often extended to the private sphere of family life. He produced a portrait group featuring his father, Nathaniel Tilson, alongside other family members. This collection of portraits was later exhibited at the National Portrait Exhibition in South Kensington in 1867. His ability to handle the likenesses of those within his own circle speaks to the personal nature of his practice.

In 1695, he completed a full-length oil painting of Margaret Brownlow (1687-1710) and an unidentified attendant. The girl is shown standing on a terrace, wearing a blue dress and a yellow mantle, holding a basket of flowers. Beside her, a child attendant holding a King Charles spaniel accompanies her. This work remains part of the Belton House collection.

Later Years and Death

Upon returning to England, Tilson found himself well-positioned within the social circles of the time. His family connections helped secure his place among the portraitists of London. He worked primarily in oil and crayons, developing a reputation for his ability to handle these mediums. His studio was a place of significant substance; at the time of his passing, he left behind a considerable estate that included gold, silver plate, jewels, and various paintings.

The trajectory of his career was cut short by a personal tragedy. In 1695, at the age of thirty-six, he took his own life in London. This act, driven by disappointment in love, ended a career that had been gaining momentum in the post-Lely era. He died in London, leaving behind works that would eventually find their way into private collections and public exhibitions.

Where to See the Works Today

Tracing the physical remains of Tilson's output requires looking toward specific private and public collections. One can find a significant oil on canvas at Belton House in Lincolnshire. This work, titled Margaret Brownlow (1687-1710) and an unidentified attendant, measures 1410 x 1029 mm. The painting depicts a young girl in a blue dress and yellow mantle, accompanied by a child attendant and a King Charles spaniel on a terrace.

Other pieces have moved through the hands of his descendants and collectors. A portrait group featuring his father, Nathaniel Tilson, and the rest of the family, along with a self-portrait, once belonged to Henry Tilson Shaen Carter, Esq., of Watlington House, Oxfordshire. These works were part of the National Portrait Exhibition in South Kensington in 1867.
