Early Life, Family and Training

Henry Simpson enters the world on 1 August 1851 in Penrith, Cumbria. He is born into a family of substance; his father, John Simpson, is a landed proprietor managing 180 acres of land. His mother, Nancy Holme, provides the other half of a household rooted in the Cumbrian landscape. By 1861, the family's connection to the land is clear, with John maintaining the farm at Plumpton Wall alongside his sons, Joseph and Robert.

The trajectory of Henry Simpson shifts from the agrarian life of his father toward formal academic discipline. He receives his early education at Carlisle Grammar School, a foundation that leads him toward the rigorous technical training of the Slade School of Fine Art. Here, the son of a landowner moves from the fields of Cumbria into the structured environment of professional artistic study.

Artistic Career and Professional Circles

The studio life in Chelsea defines his professional peak. Living in the Trafalgar Studios on Manresa Road, Simpson operates within the dense creative atmosphere of the district. He shares a workspace with Walter Richard Sickert, a proximity that places him at the center of significant artistic shifts. His correspondence and friendship with James McNeill Whistler further cement his position within these influential circles. He is a man of varied subjects, moving between landscape, coastal, architectural, genre, and figure painting.

Institutional recognition follows his immersion in these circles. In 1887, he joins the New English Art Club. His work finds its way into the competitive arenas of the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He moves through the established exhibition circuits, presenting his vision to the public through various galleries and societies.

Key Works and Exhibitions

The trajectory of his public presence begins to take shape in the late 1870s. In 1878, he brings A Pilgrim to the Royal Academy, marking an early entry into the prestigious exhibition circuit. His presence in these institutional spaces continues as he moves through various galleries, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He also finds space within the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery, and the Fine Art Society, establishing a consistent presence in the London art scene.

His portraiture reaches a significant point of recognition in the work Head of a Young Girl. This piece finds its place within the Musée Mesdag in La Haye. The work reflects the technical focus of his practice, capturing a specific sense of character that secures its position in a major collection. His reach extends beyond the borders of the United Kingdom, as his reputation as a painter of landscapes, coastal scenes, and figures gains traction across different European contexts.

By the second decade of the twentieth century, his career reaches a milestone in the capital. In April 1910, he holds a solo exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in London. This moment serves as a concentrated presentation of his output, following years of exhibiting with the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of British Artists. His work remains anchored in the study of figure and genre, maintaining a steady presence in the galleries of London and beyond.
