A Life Between Two Lands

The story of George Mosson begins in the warmth of Aix-en-Provence, where he entered the world in 1851. Though his roots were planted in the south of France, a profound shift occurred when he was only fourteen years old. He moved to Berlin, a city that would become the true home of his spirit and his craft. This migration shaped a dual identity, blending French origins with German discipline. In Berlin, he completed his schooling and sought out the rigorous training of the Academy of Arts. Under the guidance of professors Carl Steffeck and Hermann Freese, he learned to command the brush, later continuing his studies at the Weimar Saxon Grand Ducal Art School.

His early years in the German capital were marked by a growing hunger for artistic expression that went beyond traditional boundaries. By 1884, he began to present his works to the public, marking the start of a long and active career in the Berlin art scene. He was not merely a student of the old ways but a man driven by the desire for change.

The Spirit of Rebellion

As the late nineteenth century progressed, Mosson found himself at the heart of a significant movement against artistic conservatism. He grew weary of the rigid structures held by the Association of Berlin Artists. This frustration led him to join forces with other forward-thinking creators to establish new collectives. In 1892, he helped found the Vereinigung der XI, and later, in 1898, he became a founding member of the Berliner Secession. This group was born from a need to protest the stale traditions of the state-run academies.

The tides of art history continued to shift, and so did his allegiances. When the Secession split in 1913, Mosson did not retreat into isolation. Instead, he moved toward the Free Secession, working alongside figures such as Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt. His commitment to the Union of German Artists further cemented his place within the evolving landscape of German Impressionism. He lived through a period of immense transformation in the art world, always seeking the pulse of the new.

Flowers and Light

While he possessed the skill to capture landscapes and portraits, it was in the quiet intimacy of the still life that his true voice emerged. Mosson had a particular affinity for flowers. His paintings often focused on floral arrangements, where he could experiment with color and light. He used oil on canvas, pastel, and drawing to bring these botanical subjects to life. There is a certain care in his work, seen in pieces like his 1928 large still life or his 1931 pastel of apples, where the balance of composition and the use of bright tones create a sense of natural presence.

His technique often involved a thick application of paint, using shades of pink, yellow, and white to give his floral subjects weight and texture. These works were not merely studies of plants but explorations of how light interacts with organic forms. Even in his more delicate drawings, the proficiency of his hand is evident. His legacy remains held in important collections, such as the Berlin National Gallery, ensuring that his vision of the natural world continues to be seen long after his death in Berlin in 1933.
