Daniele Tozzi: Where Words Become Art

Italian lettering artist Daniele Tozzi seamlessly merges the rebellious spirit of graffiti with meticulous design principles, resulting in a distinctive artistic vision rooted in music and calligraphy. Born in Rome in 1981, Tozzi’s journey into art began amidst the vibrant energy of the underground culture during the late nineties, where he initially immersed himself in the practice of graffiti writing. This formative experience instilled within him an understanding of urban aesthetics and a fascination for visual communication that would continue to shape his artistic pursuits. Following his studies at European Design Institute (IED) in Rome, Tozzi honed his skills as a graphic designer for agencies and brands, gaining invaluable insight into the commercial landscape while nurturing his creative sensibilities. Since then, he has cultivated a freelance career, collaborating with clients both domestically and internationally – including Fendi, Land Rover, Nastro Azzurro, Oakley, Chesterfield, Poste Italiane, Casio G-Shock, and Novartis – demonstrating versatility and adaptability within the artistic realm. His dedication to teaching extends beyond his studio practice; he’s conducted workshops in Berlin, Milan, Turin, Rome, and Naples, sharing his knowledge and inspiring aspiring artists. Fuoristudio, established in 2018 alongside his creative partner Gabriele Cigna, represents Tozzi's commitment to fostering innovation and artistic exploration. This collaborative laboratory transcends traditional boundaries between design and art, propelling him toward new horizons of creativity. The studio’s ethos centers on disseminating artistic concepts through diverse mediums, from graphic design to sculptural installations. The core of Tozzi’s artistic practice lies in lettering – a captivating blend of visual artistry and linguistic expression. Driven by an unwavering curiosity, he embarked upon extensive research into various drawing techniques and tools until he discovered his signature style: the calligram. This technique involves crafting artworks where words are arranged to form shapes or silhouettes that echo musical compositions, reflecting Tozzi’s profound appreciation for sonic influences. His work draws inspiration from music's rhythm and melody, transforming textual elements into evocative visual representations. Tozzi’s artistic evolution has been marked by a consistent exploration of materials and methods. Initially experimenting with acrylic paint and colored ink on paper, he embraced the calligram technique as his primary medium – a deliberate choice that honors tradition while simultaneously pushing creative boundaries. His pieces are characterized by bold typography and intricate compositions, often referencing graffiti aesthetics and conveying powerful messages through visual storytelling. He has gained recognition for his ability to translate musical concepts into striking artistic forms.
