Heo Suyoung’s earlier paintings form pictorial manifestations of books. His method was to pick up one of the illustrated guides to animals and plants, or a nature photography book from his collection, then draw its entire content—from first page to last—into a single scene. Each of his later works represents one year of participating in several different artist’s residency programs. Therefore, all four seasons are accumulated in one painting, and whenever the painting is finished, so is his residency. In his paintings, compiling something onto the canvas each day is a way of recording that day. As a result, landscapes of overlapping situations, which could not usually coexist, unfold along with a moment of different times being intermingled. Heo Suyoung repeats the process of drawing on his own drawings, and such a process archives fragmentation of his drawing surfaces

The Layered Chronicles of SuYoung Heo

Born in South Korea in 1984, SuYoung Heo has emerged as a profound voice in contemporary landscape painting, crafting works that transcend mere visual documentation to touch upon the very essence of existence. His artistic journey is not one of simple observation, but rather an intricate process of meticulous layering and immersive contemplation. While his early impulses were driven by a desire to reproduce the natural world with accuracy, Heo’s practice quickly matured into a much deeper exploration of reality’s inherent impermanence. Through a method that mirrors the fluid, often fragmented nature of human memory, he accumulates and overlaps landscapes onto a single canvas, prioritizing the emotional resonance of a scene over its precise topographical replication.

The foundation of Heo’s technical mastery was laid during his formative years at the Seoul National University of Science and Technology, where he earned both his BFA in 2008 and his MFA in 2010. These academic pursuits provided him with a disciplined artistic sensibility, allowing him to refine the skills necessary for his signature technique of repetitive drawing. In his earlier period, Heo’s work functioned as pictorial manifestations of books; he would select illustrated guides of flora and fauna or nature photography collections and painstakingly translate their entire contents—from the first page to the last—into a singular, unified scene. This transformative process turned the canvas into a repository of knowledge and observation, where the boundaries between literature and landscape began to dissolve.

A Synthesis of Time, Memory, and Place

As his career progressed, Heo’s work evolved to incorporate the temporal dimension of his own life, specifically through his participation in various artist residency programs. Each painting became a vessel for a specific year of his journey, effectively compressing the passage of all four seasons into a single, cohesive image. This method of accumulating landscapes serves as a daily record of existence, where the act of compiling elements onto the canvas mirrors the way we archive our own experiences. The resulting compositions feature overlapping situations and temporalities that could not coexist in reality, creating a dreamlike state where different moments in time are intermingled within a single frame.

His stylistic development has also been marked by a fascinating tension between tradition and modernity. While deeply rooted in the natural heritage of his Korean homeland, Heo experimented with the vibrant energy of Pop Art. By injecting color palettes and stylistic flourishes reminiscent of icons like Warhol and Lichtenstein into his landscapes, he challenged the conventions of traditional nature painting. This fusion allowed him to push the boundaries of the genre, blending the contemplative stillness of landscape art with a contemporary, graphic vitality.

The Resonance of the DMZ and Beyond

A transformative milestone in Heo’s creative evolution occurred during his residency at Yangjiri Residency in 2019. Engaging deeply with the Korean landscape—specifically the poignant and complex DMZ region—he began to explore how art could convey profound spatial perceptions and complex political and emotional ideas. This period of intense engagement with a landscape marked by both beauty and historical tension deepened his understanding of how art can serve as a medium for much more than visual pleasure; it can become a way to navigate the complexities of history and identity.

Today, SuYoung Heo’s significance lies in his ability to use the canvas as an archive of fragmentation and wholeness. His work remains a testament to the power of slow painting—a deliberate, rhythmic process of drawing upon previous layers to create a rich, textured reality. Through his unique lens, the landscape is no longer just a place to be seen, but a living, breathing entity that holds the weight of memory, the passage of time, and the enduring spirit of the natural world.
