Born around 1856 near Hurumu in the Illu Abbaboora region, his early life was tragically disrupted by the brutal realities of slave raiding—a common fate for many Oromo people during that era. Originally named Hika, meaning “translator” in the Oromo language, a prophetic foreshadowing of his future calling, he was stolen from his mother at a young age and subjected to repeated sales as a slave. This harrowing period instilled within him a deep empathy and a profound understanding of the human condition, qualities that would later permeate his life’s work.

His fortunes began to shift when Werner Munzinger, the French vice-consul, intervened and secured his freedom at Massawa on the Red Sea coast. It was here, in 1870, that Onesimos entered the Swedish Evangelical Mission (SEM) school led by Rev. Bengt Peter Lundahl. The SEM provided him with an education, nurturing a nascent intellectual curiosity and fostering a growing spiritual devotion.
