Under the watchful eye of the celebrated neoclassical master Vincenzo Camuccini, Ciccarelli absorbed the principles of Greco-Roman aesthetics—a style defined by clarity, balanced composition, and an almost sculptural precision in the rendering of the human figure.
His talent soon transcended the borders of Italy, leading him to a prestigious appointment within the Brazilian Imperial Court. In 1843, summoned by Emperor Pedro II, Ciccarelli arrived in Rio de Janeiro to serve as a court painter and as the Master of Painting for the Empress consort, Teresa Cristina. This era of his life was marked by both royal patronage and significant institutional influence. Upon arriving in Santiago, he underwent a profound transformation, adopting Chilean nationality and the name Alejandro. He became the inaugural director of the newly established Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Santiago, a position he held for two decades.
