William Hart se narodil v Paisley ve Spojeném království, ale jeho osud byl neodmyslitelně spjat s Amerikou, kam v roce 1831 emigroval s rodinou a nakonec se usadili v Albany, New York. Jeho první krůčky v umění začaly jako u učedníka dekorativního malíře v Albany a Troy, kde získal své první zkušenosti zdobieniem panelů kočárů krajinnými motivy. Po období, kdy se věnoval portrétní malbě a po neúspěšných pokusech o získání zakázek v centrálních státech se Hart v roce 1848 poprvé vystavil svou práci v National Academy of Design. Po studiu v Evropě se vrátil do Ameriky, kde se jeho zájem definitivně obrátil k malbě krajiny. Nakonec se usadil v New York City, kde v roce 1858 otevřel studio v budově Tenth Street Studio Building a v roce 1865 působil jako prezident Brooklyn Academy of Design.
Jako významný člen hudsonriverovské školy vyvinul Hart vyzrálý styl krajinářství, který klade důraz na světlo a atmosféru; stal se mistrem v zachycení úhlového dopadu slunečních paprsků a hlubokých stínů v popředí. V jeho pozdějších dílech se často jako opakující se motiv objevuje dobytek, často zobrazující krávy pasoucí se nebo pijící vodu v popředí či středovém planu na pozadí idylické, venkovské krajiny. Kromě svých olejomaleb byl Hart známý svými výjimečnými rytinami, mezi které patří i jeho ikonické dílo „Naponock (Naponoch) Scenery, Ulster County, New York“. Jeho bohatá tvorba zahrnovala skici, akvarely i zápisníky, z nichž mnohé si ponechala jeho rodina a dnes jsou uchovávány v Albany Institute of History & Art.
