A Life Between Continents
Leon Lippert began his life in Sailauf, Germany, in 1863. His hands learned the craft of painting in Cincinnati, a city that shaped his technical foundation. He eventually moved across the ocean, becoming a German immigrant to the United States. His work was not limited to a single subject; he moved between portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. He also applied his skill to murals, church decorations, and commercial illustrations. His hands were busy with many different kinds of visual tasks throughout his long life.
He lived until 1947, passing away in Newport, Kentucky. His career spanned many decades, covering the transition from the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth century. He was a man of many tools and many subjects.
The Texture of the Work
His approach to a canvas often involved more than just pigment on cloth. He worked with various materials to achieve the specific effects he desired. In some instances, he used a technique that combined different media to create depth and character:
- Oil on photograph on artist's cardboard
- Oil over silver photographic print on artists cardboard
This method allowed him to build upon existing imagery, blending the precision of a photograph with the tactile quality of oil paint. It is a process of layering that requires a steady hand and a clear eye for how light sits upon a surface.
Hawaiian Nights
One of his notable pieces, titled Hawaiian Nights, offers a glimpse into his ability to capture a specific moment. The work depicts a girl in a grass skirt playing a mandolin, though the shape and pegs suggest it may be a ukulele. The painting is rendered on cardboard, measuring 28 inches by 18 inches. It shows a quiet, focused scene, where the subject is lost in the music. The use of oil over a photographic print gives the figure a grounded, physical presence that simple paint might not achieve alone.
