This intimate connection to the raw materials of industry likely planted the seeds for his later fascination with the coal-mining communities of Northumberland and Durham.
The foundation of Hair's technical brilliance can be traced back to the workshops of Mark Lambert, a skilled Tyneside engraver and lithographer. Through Lambert, Hair inherited a lineage of precision that connected him to the legendary wood engraver Thomas Bewick. This apprenticeship was crucial; it instilled in him a meticulous approach to detail and an understanding of how fine lines could evoke the heavy atmosphere of a working landscape.
