Created in 1941, Bottle and Fish is a Cubist still life painting by Georges Braque. The composition presents a structured arrangement of everyday objects set against a dark background. Within the scene, a fish, a bottle, and a piece of fruit—which may be an egg or a lemon—are positioned upon a darkly clothed table. Behind these central elements, the background features geometric shapes that suggest a simplified window.
The artwork is rendered in a grayscale palette, utilizing various shades of grey to define the forms. The technique employs oil paint on canvas with controlled and precise brushstrokes, resulting in a smooth texture. Lighting appears to originate from above and slightly in front of the subjects, casting subtle shadows that delineate the shapes. The perspective is flattened, emphasizing rectangular and oval forms through a monochromatic scheme with highlights.
