Описание на произведението

In the early 1970s David Porter was a contributing photographer for some of the most influential Australian Rock music and underground publications (Go-Set, Daily/Planet, Rolling Stone (Australian Edition), The Digger. Porter was based in Melbourne, his subject the zeitgeist of its Rock/Pop music, underground theatre, and Counterculture scenes, sometimes working as ‘David Porter’, sometimes ‘Jacques L’Affrique’, sometimes ‘Jack Africa’. In 1973 he left Melbourne, stopped working in commercial photography, and pursued a teaching career. This photograph was taken at T.F. MUCH/MUCH MORE BALLROOM (1970-72)Cathedral Hall (aka Central Hall) Brunswick St, FitzroySeries of ‘Counterculture’ performance events staged at Cathedral Hall (owned by the Catholic Church). Created by John Pinder, Peter Andrew, Warren Knight, Bani McSpeeden, Hugh McSpedden. Music, art, light shows, circus, and vaudeville inspired by the psychedelic San Francisco ballrooms of the late 1960s. Built 1903 Cathedral Hall had generous floor space, large proscenium style stage, heavy draw curtains, large domed windows, ornate ceiling and chandeliers, dress circle on three sides facing the stage. Held up to 1,500 patrons (sitting on the floor and in the balcony, standing or dancing). The first T.F. Much Ballroom took place in August 1970 featuring Spectrum, Jeff Crozier’s Indian Medicine Magik Show, Lipp Arthur, Adderley Smith Blues Band, Sons of the Vegetal Mother, Gerry Humphreys & the Joy Band, Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, Margret RoadKnight, Flash Light Show, Tribe Theatre. A flea market also sold macrobiotic food, hippie clothing. Subsequent events were usually held monthly and featured concert-style performances presenting multiple musical acts interspersed with comedy, poetry, theatrical, dance and novelty performances. The epicentre of the early 1970s ‘Carlton scene’, the T.F. Much/Much More Ballroom was a ‘head venue’. Capturing Melbourne’s alternative theatre, music, and experimental art scenes and counterculture, it was the antithesis of Melbourne’s pub and suburban rock music circuits. After a name change (necessitated when officials twigged that T.F. Much meant ‘Too Fucking’ Much) the ‘Much More Ballroom’ began in November 1971. The last event was held in December 1972 with Spectrum, Indelible Murtceps, Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, Miss Universe, Gary Young and Hot Dog.

David Dixon Porter: A Sailor's Vision Beyond the Waves

David Dixon Porter (1813-1891) stands as a singular figure in American naval history—a man whose legacy transcends mere military service, embedding itself within the realm of artistic expression. Born Chester, Pennsylvania, into a family steeped in maritime tradition, Porter’s life was inextricably linked to the sea from his earliest years, nurtured by the unwavering dedication of his father, Commodore David Porter, a hero of the War of 1812 who instilled in him a profound respect for naval discipline and strategic thinking. This formative influence would shape not only Porter's career but also his artistic sensibilities—a duality that distinguishes him from many of his contemporaries.
  • Early Life & Family Legacy: David Dixon Porter’s father, Commodore David Porter, commanded the USS *Enterprise* during the War of 1812, securing American independence through daring maneuvers and unwavering resolve. This familial connection to naval heroism profoundly impacted young David, fostering a lifelong fascination with maritime pursuits.
  • Naval Beginnings & Mexican War Service: At just ten years old, Porter embarked on his first voyage aboard the USS *John Adams* alongside his father, gaining invaluable experience in navigation and seamanship. His service continued during the Mexican War (1846-1848), where he commanded the frigate *Libertad*, demonstrating courage and adaptability amidst challenging circumstances.
The American Civil War catapulted Porter into the spotlight as a naval commander, tasked with safeguarding Union interests. His bold decision to seize command of the USS *Powhatan* without explicit authorization—a move initially criticized by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles—revealed his proactive spirit and unwavering loyalty to preserving the nation’s unity. However, it was during the siege of New Orleans in April 1862 that Porter truly cemented his reputation as a naval innovator. Leading a flotilla of mortar boats with remarkable precision, he spearheaded the capture of the city, disrupting Confederate control over the Mississippi River and bolstering Ulysses S. Grant's military campaign. This decisive victory underscored Porter’s ability to inspire confidence and orchestrate complex operations under pressure.
  • Commanding Vicksburg & Securing Union Victory: Porter’s leadership was instrumental in supporting General Grant during the grueling Vicksburg Campaign, culminating in the city’s surrender on July 4, 1863—a pivotal moment that dramatically shifted the balance of power in favor of the Union.
  • The Red River Expedition & Resilience: Porter faced considerable logistical hurdles during the Red River Expedition in Louisiana (1864), navigating treacherous waters and overcoming obstacles with unwavering determination. Despite setbacks, his steadfast resolve ensured the success of the mission.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Porter possessed a surprising passion for photography—a pursuit that offered him an alternative avenue for artistic expression. He meticulously documented naval life through concert photographs, band portraits, and event scenes, capturing the spirit of the era with remarkable detail and sensitivity. These images stand as testament to Porter’s multifaceted personality—a man who excelled in both leadership and artistry, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond the annals of naval history. His photographic work provides invaluable insight into 19th-century American society, blending historical documentation with artistic vision. David Dixon Porter's contribution to art is remarkable considering his primary vocation was naval service. He embodies the spirit of innovation and dedication—a figure whose story continues to inspire admiration for both military prowess and creative exploration.
