While the broader movements of the sixteenth century were reshaping the visual language of Europe, Heller operated within a specific, localized context of German artistry. His presence in the annals of art history is defined by a singular, heavy focus on the dramatic and the historical, capturing the chaos of conflict through the medium of oil on wood.

The brushwork of Heller is tied to the visceral realities of his era. He does not merely depict scenes; he reconstructs the tension of the sixteenth century. His work reflects a period of intense transition, where the rigid structures of the late Middle Ages were colliding with the burgeoning complexities of the Renaissance.
