A Life of Surveying and Exploration
Robert Hyde Colebrooke was a British infantry officer in India who served as the Surveyor General of Bengal from 1794 until his death in 1808. His career was defined by extensive topographical work and scientific inquiry across the Indian subcontinent. He conducted early surveys in Bengal and Mysore, and he was trained in topographical illustration and surveying. In 1794, he produced "Twelve views of places in the kingdom of Mysore" based on his work in Mysore in 1790. His explorations included accompanying Archibald Blair to survey the Andaman Islands in 1789, a region where Colebrooke Island and Passage were later named in his honor. Beyond his topographical work, he was a keen astronomer who corresponded with the Madras Observatory and a scholar who compiled a vocabulary of Andaman islanders.
Scientific and Military Service
Throughout his military and professional life, Colebrooke engaged in significant geographical and scientific studies. He surveyed the distance from Hooghly to Madras using a perambulator and took a special interest in the changing course of the Ganges river, even proposing a canal to connect the Churni River and the Ganges. His scientific observations included describing the volcanic Barren Island. He held the rank of Lieutenant in 1778 and was promoted to Lt-Colonel in 1803. He died of dysentery in 1808 while traveling from Rohillakhand to Calcutta at Bhagalpur.
