A Glimpse of Montmartre
The year is 1834. In the narrow, winding streets of Montmartre, the air carries the scent of industry and the grit of urban life. Henri-Arsène Macaire captures a specific, fleeting moment of this Parisian landscape. His brush finds the Four à plâtre, a plaster kiln, documenting a structure that was once a common sight in the working districts of the city. The work is small, measuring 24.5 cm in height and 33 cm in width, yet it carries the weight of a vanishing era.
Macaire’s hand is visible in the precise application of pigment, leaving a signature and date at the bottom left front: "Henri Macaire 1834". This piece, now held by the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, offers a window into the topographical reality of 19th-century France. It is a study of utility and architecture rather than idealized beauty.
The Fragmented Record
Historical records regarding the life of Henri Macaire remain sparse, leaving much of his personal trajectory to the shadows of the archives. We know he was a painter active in France during the first half of the 19th century. His presence in the art world is defined by this specific, localized observation of Parisian life.

Legacy in the Archives
The survival of his work depends on the preservation of the city's history. While the man himself passed away after 1836, his vision of the 1834 landscape remains intact within the collections of the Carnavalet Museum. He provides a visual anchor for historians seeking to understand the physical makeup of Paris before the massive urban transformations of later decades. His contribution is a matter of documentation, preserving the textures of a city in transition.
