The Life and Art of Georg Lang

Georg Lang was a German painter who practiced the Nazarene style. Born in Deining, Germany, he likely spent a significant period in Vienna, where he engaged with this specific artistic movement. His work was deeply connected to the religious devotion of his era, characterized by luminous colors and depictions of the life of Jesus. His paintings often featured saints with pious, serious expressions, dressed in long garments with prominent, contrasting drapery.

His career was marked by extensive ecclesiastical commissions, including ceiling frescoes, altarpieces, and Stations of the Cross. These works can be found in numerous churches throughout the area surrounding Neumarkt. His artistic legacy includes works in the following locations:

Final Years and Recognition

Lang's life came to an end in Mittersthal. While working on the ceiling of the church in Mittersthal, he fell from a scaffold and passed away. He was buried in Deining. While his works were sometimes overlooked or even painted over in the period following the Second World War, his artistic value is being rediscovered. In the year 2000, the community of Deining honored his memory by placing a bronze bust of him on the Rathausplatz.
