Early Life and Artistic Training

Gabriel Liston begins in San Antonio, Texas. He moves from there to the landscapes of Western Colorado, where he is raised. This environment provides the initial backdrop to a life shaped by specific geographies. He eventually settles in Portland, Oregon, where he continues his practice.

His formal education follows a path through the American West. He studies at Colorado Mountain College and the Denver Art Students League. These formative years lead him to the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. In 1995, he receives his BFA in Painting.

Artistic Themes and Techniques

The work centers on the entanglement of humans and water. This preoccupation manifests in paintings, drawings, and writing that probe the intersections of history and domestic life. In some instances, the imagery takes on a quality of aching nostalgia, utilizing an illustrative style that recalls childhood. These scenes often depict rural landscapes—snow-dusted groves, windswept fields, or dilapidated barns—where the clarity of the setting is challenged by encroaching, amorphous forms. These shapes suggest the erosion of film negatives or the instability of a fading memory.

Technique varies by the medium's capacity to capture these shifting states. Oil paintings provide a sense of depth and color, while charcoal sketches and watercolors offer a more skeletal, monochromatic alternative. He also works on unconventional surfaces, creating paintings on wooden hat and brim blocks. These smaller, monochromatic pieces often stand in contrast to the larger works, acting as physical documents of a memory, stripped of its full detail.

Exhibitions and Professional Activity

Liston’s professional trajectory is marked by long-term associations with several key galleries. Between 2004 and 2019, he worked with Plus Gallery in Denver. This period overlapped with his time at the New American Art Union of Portland, where he was represented from 2005 to 2010. Following this, he maintained a relationship with the Froelick Gallery of Portland until February 2022.

The artist’s recent activity includes a solo exhibition at the Russo Lee Gallery in October 2023. Titled Overlands, the show emerged from a specific period of travel. During a 2022 railway trip across the country, Liston used notebook sketches as the foundation for the works. He kept watercolors open and painted several pages while still on the train, capturing the landscape through the window.

His work has moved into various public and private collections. These include holdings at OHSU in Portland, Oregon, and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio. His exhibition history includes numerous group and solo shows dating back to 1994, and he has received recognition such as a Regional Arts and Culture Council Project Grant in 2014.
